The Union Cabinet approves the continuation of PMAY-Gramin to construct 2 crore more homes for rural households, ensuring safe and secure living conditions.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) from 2024-2029. This extension aims to construct 2 crore additional houses for rural households, with an investment of ₹3.06 lakh crore. The scheme will provide financial assistance of ₹1.20 lakh for houses in plain areas and ₹1.30 lakh in hilly regions and the Northeast, ensuring safe and secure homes for nearly 10 crore people.

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for the fiscal years 2024-25 to 2028-29. This decision extends the scheme, originally launched in April 2016, to construct 2 crore additional houses, aiming to meet the housing needs of rural households across India.

The approved plan involves a total outlay of ₹3,06,137 crore, with the Central Government contributing ₹2,05,856 crore, and the remaining ₹1,00,281 crore being shared by state governments. The financial assistance for house construction remains at ₹1.20 lakh per unit in plain areas and ₹1.30 lakh per unit in the North Eastern Region, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Union Territories like Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

This initiative will continue to target eligible households identified through the Awaas+ list and the updated Socio Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011. The scheme’s extension is expected to benefit nearly 10 crore individuals by providing them with safe, secure, and well-equipped homes.

Key highlights of the approval include:

  • Completion of 35 lakh houses from the previous phase by March 2024.
  • Continued assistance at the existing rates for new constructions.
  • Allocation of 2% of the program funds for administrative purposes, with 1.70% for states/UTs and 0.30% retained at the central level.

The extension of PMAY-G reflects the government’s commitment to achieving the “Housing for All” goal in rural areas, ensuring that even the most vulnerable populations have access to quality housing.
