Delhi-based women refugees from Pakistan celebrated Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhi to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The event highlighted the significance of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which has provided these women with Indian citizenship, ensuring their safety and security in the country.
On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, women refugees from Pakistan residing in Delhi tied rakhi to Union Minister Piyush Goyal. The event was symbolic of the protection and safety the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) has offered to these refugees, who have been granted Indian citizenship under the act.
Alongside the women refugees, Sadhvi Rithambara and Brahmakumari sisters also participated in the Raksha Bandhan celebrations with Piyush Goyal. The minister emphasized that the Citizenship Act has restored dignity and security to those who sought refuge in India due to persecution in neighboring countries.
“The Citizenship (Amendment) Act has provided respect and safety that is your right,” stated Piyush Goyal during the event, expressing his joy at celebrating Raksha Bandhan with the refugees.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, passed in December 2019, provides a pathway to Indian citizenship for persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The act has been a significant part of the Indian government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of minority refugees.
The CAA has had a profound impact on the lives of many refugees, particularly women, who have gained a sense of belonging and security in India. The act has been instrumental in providing them with the legal status and protection needed to rebuild their lives.
Despite its benefits, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act has faced criticism and opposition from various quarters, with concerns over its implications for secularism and the exclusion of certain groups. Protests and legal challenges have emerged in response to the act’s implementation.
Piyush Goyal credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong leadership and commitment to the successful implementation of the CAA, stating that it has been a crucial step in safeguarding the rights of persecuted minorities.
The Raksha Bandhan celebration with women refugees highlighted the positive impact of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on their lives, as they now enjoy the safety and security of Indian citizenship. The event underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to protecting the rights of minorities from neighboring countries.
