The 10th edition of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise MITRA SHAKTI officially commenced today at the Army Training School in Maduru Oya, Sri Lanka. This annual training exercise, scheduled from August 12 to August 25, 2024, is designed to strengthen the joint military capabilities of India and Sri Lanka, focusing on counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban environments.

The Indian contingent, consisting of 106 personnel, is led by a Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, with additional personnel from various arms and services. On the Sri Lankan side, the Gajaba Regiment of the Sri Lankan Army is participating. MITRA SHAKTI, which alternates between India and Sri Lanka each year, held its last edition in Pune in November 2023.

The primary objective of Exercise MITRA SHAKTI is to enhance the ability of both nations to undertake joint military operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. The exercise emphasizes operations in a semi-urban environment, where troops will rehearse tactical drills such as responding to terrorist actions, establishing joint command posts, setting up intelligence and surveillance centers, securing helipads, and conducting cordon and search operations.

Specialized operations, including Small Team Insertion & Extraction, Special Heliborne Operations, and the use of drones and counter-drone systems, will also be practiced during the exercise. These tactical drills are intended to foster the sharing of best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures between the two armies, enhancing interoperability and building camaraderie.

Exercise MITRA SHAKTI is not only a platform for tactical training but also a significant step towards deepening defence cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. By facilitating mutual understanding and collaboration, the exercise contributes to the strong bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.
